Eateries...
When you visit Reed Hollow, two food places are really close by. If your tummy's grumbling and it's around lunchtime, there's Sweet Fordy's. If it's four o'clock or after, there's Oliveira's. Check them out below.
Sweet Fordy's
This restaurant is owned by Patrick and Elena Ford, hence the name. They make all of their pasteries and breads on the premises, 100% from scratch. People rave about their baked items. But, they are much more than a bakery. They also offer salads, soups, and sandwiches. They have an extensive menu for salads and platters, finger sandwiches, soups, deli platters, quiches, and bakery items that can be ordered and picked up to serve a family or crowd. The inside is very fun... see the next two pictures.
Open tuesday - Friday 7 am - 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday 7 am - 4 pm 781-294-8550 www.sweetfordys.com
Directions--Located also on Center St. (Rte. 36), just turn right out of Reed Hollow. Sweet Fordy's is about half a mile on your right.

Oliveira's
Oliveira's is set right on the edge of Hobomock Pond. It used to be called the Hobomock Inn and was a favorite place for Mayor Curley to visit. He was, in fact, the person who got Center St. to become a route...Route 36, the shortest route in the state! Nothing like the power of being a politician! Anyway, Oliveira's specializes in Italian and American cuisine and is open Tuesday through Sunday at 4:00, so you could go from Reed Hollow and enjoy a nice supper before you head home. In the summer months, there is an outside patio located on the pond. A picture of the pond follows. The restaurant is located right before Sweet Fordy's, about a half a mile on your right after you turn right out of Reed Hollow. Oliveira's telephone number--781-294-4700.
Places to walk or have a picnic...
This section is not complete yet, but here are a couple places that are close by...
Pembroke Town Center
This picture was taken from inside the Pembroke Center Cemetery. It's a great place to walk through (no dogs allowed) and see graves dating back to the 1700's with lots of names of ancient Pembrokians. The First Church in Pembroke is a beautiful old church. Inside, there is a balcony where the Indians were made to stand to hear a sermon. They weren't allowed to sit in the pew area. To the right of the Church, located on the opposite side of Center St. is the First Parish Sewing Circle building that is now a thrift store, open Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 - 3. (Summer hours might be different. I'm uncertain.) To the right of the Sewing Circle is the Pembroke Historical Society building. This was once a school. The Historical Society opens the museum inside during the special events that they hold here. Recently they had a Pancake Breakfast that was so successful, that they think they might do it more than once a year.
Pembroke Center is 1.5 miles from Reed Hollow. (Turn right out of the driveway.) Entrance to the cemetery--Bear left on Curve Street by the Church. Turn left at the end of Curve St. Entrance is on your left.
Point of interest...The grave crypt to your left as you drive in has an oval piece like a window in the door. It was put there so relatives could check in on the dead, I guess. You can, too. Just move the stone to one side and peer into the dark depths beyond...if you dare!

Pembroke Herring Run
This is such a beautiful place, located on Barker Street, Rte. 14. It's a wonderful place for a picnic. (There's a huge rock located on the property that children can't resist climbing up on.) Here the Pembroke Historical Society hosts what has become a huge event--The Grand Ol' Fish Fry. This year it will be on May 2nd (I think, I'll verify it this weekend). Because herring can no longer be taken, they're not on the menu, but you can get a yummy hotdog, cornbread, and beans while listening to Blue Grass music. You can wander along the run and participate in the duck races hosted by Captain Duck.
Herring, also called alewives, were very important to the town of Pembroke. Here's the old town saying,
Herrin' up, Herrin' down
Herrin' all about the town.
Herrin' be Pembroke's joy and pride,
If it hadn't been for herrin',
Pembroke would have died.
Directions--turn right out of Reed Hollow. Follow Rte. 36 into Pembroke Center (1.5 miles). Go straight through the set of lights in the Center. You have now joined Rte. 14. Follow Rte. 14 past the historical buildings and around the corner by the police station. The herring run is on your left about 1/4 of a mile further.

The shop holds LOTS of goodies and is really quite extensive. Below, is Jo Turner in the section off to the left of the above picture. Her husband, Carl, also helps run the shop.
